March 12, 2004
ROUND ROCK, Texas- The No. 19-ranked Arizona baseball team out-hit No. 14 Notre Dame 13 to 5, but it wasn't enough as the Fighting Irish (11-1) defeated the Wildcats 4-2 in the Round Rock College Classic on Dell Diamond on Friday. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Wildcats and dropped them to 10-7-1 for the year.
Trailing 3-2 after seven innings, the Wildcats squandered a key opportunity to close the gap after Jason Donald and Bill Rhinehart had reached second and third with just one out in the top of the eighth on a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt.
UND reliever Ryan Doherty came on and struck out sophomore Trevor Crowe for the second out and induced classmate Nick Hundley into an inning-ending fly ball to center to quash the threat and strand Donald and Rhinehart in scoring position.
Tied 2-2 after six and half innings, the Irish took the lead on an unearned run off of Wildcat reliever Scott Burns.
With one out and a runner on first, UND's Craig Cooper hit a ground ball to Moises Duran at third. The senior infielder's throw to second to get the lead runner pulled junior John Hardy off the bag for an error, allowing both runners to reach without recording an out.
A Burns wild pitch, which moved the Irish runners up to second and third, was followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Greg Lopez handing the Irish the one-run lead
Notre Dame tacked on another unearned run in the eighth on Donald's throwing error to first on Steve Sollman's grounder to lead off the inning, a sacrifice bunt by Danny Dressman and a fielder's choice ground ball by Matt Edwards.
Arizona took an initial 1-0 lead in the game on a RBI single by Brad Boyer in the fifth and tied the game after UND had plated two in the sixth with another single run in the top of the seventh when Jordan Brown drove home Crowe with a single to right.
Burns (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up the go-ahead unearned run in the seventh. UA starter Luis Cortez did not factor in the decision despite giving up just two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Cortez struck out six and walked six on the day.
UND's Chris Niesel (3-0) picked up his third win of the year, giving up two runs on 10 hits in seven innings on the mound. The right-hander struck out six and walked just one. Doherty tallied his second save of the season after working out of the one-out jam in the eighth and stranding Boyer on second in the ninth.
Arizona will close out its appearance at the Round Rock College Classic on Saturday at 7 pm CST against Penn State. Right-hander Kevin Guyette is the scheduled starter for the Wildcats.
