No. 3 Cal Doubles Up with Pair of 8-0 (5) Wins
March 12, 2004
Sunnyvale, Calif. - Cal began the NIST Tournament in fine fashion, recording a pair of 8-0 (5) wins over Purdue and Virginia. The Bears didn't waste much time scoring enough runs for the two games to be called after five innings. Kristina Thorson pitched the first perfect game or no-hitter for the Bears this season, albeit a five-inning effort, while Haley Woods homered twice, scored three runs and drove in three to lead the Bears to a 24-3 record.
Kelly Anderson got the ball in the first game against Purdue. She cruised through five innings allowing two hits and striking out four. Anderson improved her record to 14-3.
Anderson's teammates came out of the gate smoking with two runs in the first, three in the third and four in the fourth.
The battering of Purdue pitching was highlighted in the third inning when Woods went deep for her seventh home run on the year, Jessica Pamanian doubled and Chelsea Spencer sent a rocket over the left center fence for her second home run this season. Lindsay James did most of the damage in the fourth with a two-run double down the left field line.
In the second game, Thorson was on her game for five brief innings. She struck out eight in dominating fashion for the perfect effort, which improved her record to an unblemished 10-0.
The Bears gave Thorson a lead to work with in the first when Pamanian shot a two-run single scoring speedsters James and Kaleo Eldredge. Cal followed with more offense in the third, highlighted by another Woods' moon shot, her team-leading eighth home run of the season. The Bears added two in the fourth and one in the fifth before the game was called.
Cal brings two dominating performances into bracket play tomorrow at the Twin Creeks Complex. The Bears will have two games on Saturday followed by a single Sunday game.
