Tucson, Ariz. (Mar. 14) -- The University of Arizona women's basketball team has been awarded an at-large bid to the 2004 NCAA Tournament, making this the Cats' second straight NCAA berth and the sixth in the last eight years. The Wildcats have earned the No. 9 seed in the West Region and will play in a sub-regional hosted by the University of Texas.
Arizona will travel to Austin, Texas, to take on No. 8 seed and 24th-ranked Michigan State (21-8) on Sunday, Mar. 21. The second game of that doubleheader will feature No. 1 seed and second-ranked Texas (28-4) against No. 16 seed Southern University (17-12). The second-round game will be played on Tuesday, Mar. 23. Game times are still to be announced, and all contests in this year's women's tournament are slated for broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPN Fullcourt.
Last season, the Cats were the No. 6 seed in the East Region. Playing in a sub-regional at Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., Arizona was upset by No. 11 seed Notre Dame, 59-47, in the first round on Mar. 23, 2003. Notre Dame went on to pull off another upset of No. 3 seed Kansas State and advanced to the regional semifinals.
The Wildcats are 24-8 overall after finishing as runner-up in the Pac-10 Tournament to defending champion Stanford. Arizona tied the Cardinal for the regular-season Pac-10 championship, the program's first conference title.
