No. 18 Arizona Gymnastics to host NCAA South Central Regional Championships

Tucson, Ariz. (March 22) - The No. 18 University of Arizona women's gymnastics team will participate in its 18th consecutive postseason when it hosts the 2004 NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Saturday, April 3, at 6 p.m. in McKale Center. The Wildcats will host No. 5 Utah, No. 8 Florida, No. 25 Arkansas, Illinois-Chicago, and Illinois.

The top-18 ranked teams in the nation, based on their Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), were placed into six regional championship meets (three per region). The top-two teams in each of the six regional meets will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship meet in Los Angeles, April 15-17. The top two all-around competitors and the individual event winners not from a qualifying team will also receive automatic bids to the national championship.

Arizona has qualified for the regional championships every year since 1987. Last season, Arizona competed in the NCAA South Central Regional Championships in Columbia, Mo., where the Wildcats finished fourth (195.450). The Wildcats are looking for their first NCAA Championship appearance since 2002, and their first regional championship in the program's history. Arizona last hosted a regional championship in 2000, with the Wildcats finishing fourth (194.100).

Arizona will begin the meet on bars and finish on a bye after vault. Illinois-Chicago will start on vault, Florida on a bye before bars, Utah on beam, Illinois on a bye before floor, and Arkansas on floor.

Central Region (Baton Rouge, La., host LSU) - No. 6 BYU, No. 7 LSU, No. 17 Arizona State, No. 23 Auburn, No. 24 Kent State, Michigan State

North Central Region (Denver, Colo., host Denver) - No. 2 Stanford, No. 11 Washington, No. 14 Denver, No. 20 Iowa, Minnesota, Southern Utah

West Region (Corvallis, Ore., host Oregon State) - No. 3 Alabama, No. 10 Oregon State, No. 15 Oklahoma, California, Boise State, Cal State Fullerton
