Cal Wins First Race of the Season
March 23, 2004
On Sunday March 21, the Women's crew began their 2004 racing season with wins over the University of British Columbia in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight. Each of the Cal boats won its races by at least 20 seconds, with the novice boat dominating, winning by 31 seconds.
'Since this was the first outside competition we've had since late October, it was great to get out and race. Everyone raced very well, and I'm pleased with where we are at this stage. There are a number of things we need to get worked out including line-ups and a few injuries before we are running on all cylinders.' Said coach Dave O'Neill.
Cal also held two intersquad races between the varsity eight and second varsity eight, and between the third varsity eight and the novice eight. The varsity eight was victorious in its race, winning by five seconds, while the third varsity eight squeaked out a win against the novice eight, winning by a mere 1.5 seconds.
