USC Jumps Out Early For 10-1 Win Against Loyola Marymount
March 23, 2004
LOS ANGELES - Left-hander Josh Rummonds allowed only one run in 5 1/3 innings Tuesday as the USC Trojans defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions, 10-1, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. Rummonds scattered four hits to bounce back after allowing five runs in 1 2/3 innings in Sunday's 12-2 loss at South Alabama.
Sophomore catcher Jeff Clement had three RBI for the Trojans. USC improved to 10-13 on the season while Loyola Marymount falls to 14-10-1.
Clement hit a two-run homer to right in the top of the first, his third of the season, to give USC a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, right fielder Cyle Hankerd and third baseman Darin Vieira walked. Senior second baseman Michael Moon doubled to left center, scoring Hankerd. Shortstop Blake Sharpe grounded out to second, advancing the runner and scoring Vieira. Clement then made it a 5-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Moon.
The Lions scored in the sixth when Joe Frazee doubled home catcher Jonathan Higashi. Higashi went 2-for-3 for the Lions with two doubles.
USC will host UCLA in a nonconference series this weekend, beginning on Friday (March 26) at 6 p.m. The series will continue with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday (March 27) and Sunday (March 28). Saturday's game will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Net 2 with Bill MacDonald and John Jackson calling the action.
