Battle for Five Gauntlet Points Begins when UCLA travels to USC:
One of the nation's strongest crosstown rivalries will be re-visited this weekend as the Bruins head to USC's Dedeaux Field for a three-game nonconference series with the Trojans.
This series will mark the first games of a six-game season series which also includes three Pac-10 games held at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The winner of the season series will be awarded with five points in the Lexus Gauntlet points. If the series finishes at 3-3, each school will receive 2.5 points in the standings. Currently, USC leads UCLA by a 50-30 margin.
Saturday's game will be televised by FOX Sports Net 2 with Bill MacDonald and John Jackson bringing you the action. Dave Marcus and Chris Pritchett will also call the weekend games on UCLABruins.com.
Janssen Paces the Pac-10:
Senior right-hander and Friday night starter, Casey Janssen, who is 5-0 on the season, currently ranks second in the Pac-10 with a 1.35 ERA. His 44 strikeouts in 40 innings of work is tops on the Bruin staff and fourth in the conference. Janssen paces the Pac-10 by holding opponents to a .149 batting average. On the season, the Huntington Beach native has posted wins over nationally-ranked opponents, Nebraska and Texas A&M.
UCLA Avenges Loss, Defeats Loyola Marymount, 7-5:
Sophomore reliever Scott Botterman retired the final three Lion batters and left the bases loaded as he claimed his first collegiate save and the Bruins notched a 7-5 victory over Loyola Marymount.
The Bruins posted five runs in the first three frames to build a lead the Lions could not overcome. Brett McMillan and Anthony Norman both drove in two runs apiece, while Ryan McCarthy added two doubles to the UCLA attack.
On the mound, Bryan Beck improved to 2-1 on the season as he struck out four batters and allowed five hits in six innings of action.
