Trojans Open Nonconference Series With 11-4 Win Against UCLA
March 26, 2004
LOS ANGELES - Senior designated hitter Jon Brewster capped a six-run first inning with a grand slam Friday as the USC Trojans defeated the UCLA Bruins, 11-4, in the first game of a nonconference series at Dedeaux Field. Michael Friedman retired all nine batters he faced, including four strikeouts, to earn his first collegiate win.
USC improves to 11-13 on the season while UCLA falls to 13-9 overall.
Senior second baseman Michael Moon led off the Trojans' first with a single to right center as Janssen loaded the bases after hitting Blake Sharpe and Jeff Clement with a pitch. Junior first baseman Joey Metropoulos doubled to left, scoring Moon and Sharpe. After an intentional walk to Daniel Perales, Brewster hit his grand slam to left center on an 0-2 count. It was Brewster's first home run of the season.
Janssen (5-1), who had a 1.35 ERA before the game, retired eight of the next nine batters he faced. He allowed six runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in six innings.
UCLA answered with two runs in the second and fifth innings. Mike Svetlic got an RBI groundout with the bases loaded in the second, followed by a sacrifice fly by Chris Denove. Wes Whisler hit a two-run double to center in the fifth, scoring Preston Griffin and Ryan McCarthy.
The Bruins put runners at first and second with no outs in the seventh before Friedman entered the game, striking out Brett McMillan and McCarthy. Friedman retired the side when Whisler flied out to right to end the inning.
With the bases loaded and one out for the Trojans in the eighth, Darin Vieira used a bunt to score Baron Frost. UCLA pitcher Daniel Miltenberger tried to throw out Vieira, but no one was covering at first as the ball sailed to right field. The ball rolled under Josh Roenicke's glove for the second error of the play as Vieira advanced to third with three runs scoring on the play. Moon singled to right, scoring Vieira for the 11-4 lead.
Sophomore Baron Frost hit his 14th double of the season in a 2-for-4 night for the Trojans.
The series will continue tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start. Saturday's game will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Net 2 with Bill MacDonald and John Jackson calling the action. The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
