W-GOLF IN 14TH AT MOUNTAIN VIEW COLLEGIATE

Mar 27, 2004

TUCSON -   Freshman Hannah Hoch (75-73-148) is in 16th place as the University of Colorado women's golf team opened its own sixth annual Mountain View Collegiate here Saturday with a spring season low 303 in the opening loop, and carded a 310 in the second as the Buffs sit in 14th going into Sunday's final round.

Denver shot two of the lowest rounds in Mountain View Collegiate history, as the Pioneers shot 296-292 on the Mountain View Golf Course for a 12-over-par 588 and sit five strokes ahead of Iowa State (297-296-593) and seven ahead of both Portland State (295-300-595) and San Diego State (296-299-595) in the team standings.  A slim five strokes separates the top-10 players on the leaderboard and Washington State's Kim Welch fired the second and third lowest rounds in the history of the tournament for a 3-under 70-71-141 and is a pair of strokes ahead of Amanda Costner (74-69-143) and San Diego State's Jenna Wilson (72-71-143).  Costner's second round 69 ties a tournament record individual low with Allison Johnson of Oklahoma in 2000 and Colorado's Brooke Van Wyk who matched that round a year later.

Hoch's second round 73 is her lowest of the spring season and second lowest of her career as the Buff freshman is on pace for her second straight top-20 finish.  Trailing Hoch by three strokes, sophomore Maria Persson Gulda's opening round 73 is her best loop of the spring and best round since an opening round 73 in the Lady Aztec Invitational in October.  Her second round 78 puts her in a share for 33rd with a 36-hole total 151.

Junior Allison Rella carded a first round 6-over 78 and was able to improve a stroke in her second round and sits in 57th with a two-round 155.  Playing as an individual, Jenn Footlik strung together her strongest start of the season, and best since her freshman year, with a 79-79-158 for 70th going into Sunday's final round.  In one of her strongest opening days of the year, Jessie Malcolm was CU's final scorer in both loops and the sophomore has a share of 73rd place after a 77-82-159 effort Saturday.

In her first tournament since the Las Vegas Showdown in November, freshman Regina Rodriguez struggled on the 6,040-yard layout with an 84-83-167 scorecard.

The final round of the Mountain View Collegiate will tee off with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Sunday.
