Men's Golf Remains in Third Place at National Invitational Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona State shot a one-under-par 287 Tuesday to maintain a three-shot lead at the 2004 National Invitational Tournament.

Three of the Sun Devils' five golfers shot par or better as the team carded a 287 total and finished the day with a 36-hole total of 566 (-10). All told, five of the 11 teams in the elite field head into tomorrow's final round at par or better. USC (569), host Arizona (573), Minnesota (575) and Washington (576) rounded out the top five places.

The home-standing Wildcats lost one stroke to the leaders, finishing the day with a 289 (+1) total on the day and a 573 (-3) tally after two rounds. UA's one-over 289 total, which placed the team third, was UA's first over-par round in its last five played.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was freshman Henry Liaw. The Rowland Heights, Calif., product shot a one-under 71 and is tied for sixth place in the field of 60 at 140 (-4). Liaw is three strokes off the pace set by UNLV's Ryan Moore, who finished with a two-round 137 (-7) total.

Two other Wildcats stand in the top-20 places after the first two rounds. Senior Chris Nallen, who carded Arizona's low round of the day with a three-under 69, is tied for eighth place with a 141 (-3) total, while teammate Nathan Tyler is tied for 18th place at 144 (E).

Rounding out the UA varsity lineup were Nathan Lashley, who is tied for 32nd place at 148 (+4), and Josh Esler, who is tied for 42nd place at 150 (+6).

Five other Wildcats are in the field as individuals. After 36 holes, freshman Mark Lamb is tied for 21st place with a one-over 145 total. Blaine Peffley is tied for 38th place at 149 (+5), while Nick Juszczak and Kipp Riehle are tied for 51st place at 153 (+9). Ben Marsh is in 58th place with a 156 (+12) total.

The 54-hole 2004 National Invitational Tournament continues through Tuesday at Omni Tucson National Golf Course, a par 72, 7,138-yard layout.
