April 1, 2004
MORAGA, Calif. - The No. 16 ranked Oregon State softball team rolled past Saint Mary's College on Thursday afternoon, 10-1.
Oregon State (31-9) improved to 20-0 on the season when at least one Beaver player hits a home run.
Sophomore Lisa Allen's second inning line drive home run over the left field fence gave the Beavers the early lead. OSU added two more runs in the frame, taking advantage of a pair of Saint Mary's (7-24) errors.
The Gaels rallied back in the bottom of the second, starting the inning with three straight hits and then pushing a run across the plate when Eleni Papailias drew a walk. Beaver hurler Brianne McGowan recovered to strike out the next batter and then forced back-to-back groundouts to end the threat.
Vanessa Iapala added to the OSU lead in the third inning when she blasted her team-leading seventh home run of the season over the left field fence.
The Gaels led off the bottom of the sixth with a single but the Beavers cleared the basepaths when second baseman Alana Mendoza dove for a ball in the hole and scooped it to shortstop Kelly Petersen to turn the double play.
Mendoza extended the OSU lead in the seventh inning with a flare to shallow left field that plated Iapala and Alo followed with a shot up the middle, driving in two more runs, making the final margin 10-1.
Freshman hurler Ta'Tyana McElroy struck out the final two batters in the seventh to finish the game.
Alo went 3-for-5 with three RBI on the day, while Iapala, Mendoza and Longfellow tallied two hits each. OSU finished with 14 hits in the contest compared to just four for SMC.
McGowan finished with three strikeouts in three innings of work, while senior Monica Hoffman improved to 15-6 on the year after fanning four of the six batters she faced in relief.
Oregon State returns to Pacific-10 Conference action on Friday when the Beavers face No. 11 Stanford University. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
