Beavers Can't Catch 'Cats In Ninth

April 2, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State rallied in the ninth inning but left the tying run at third base as the Beavers lost to Arizona 4-3 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (17-8 overall, 2-2 Pac-10) scored once in the ninth and had two runners aboard with two out, but Scott Nelson's line drive to leftfield was directly at UA outfielder Trevor Crowe for the final out.

The Beavers and Wildcats (14-11-1, 3-1) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., and both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com. It's also Little League Weekend, sponsored by Reser's Fine Foods, and all youth baseball and softball players wearing their uniforms to the ballpark will be admitted for $2.

In the series opener before a crowd of 1,436, OSU senior lefthander Jake Postlewait lost for the first time this season, dropping his record to 6-1; he's 11-2 over the past two seasons and both losses have been to Arizona. The Wildcats broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning when Derek Decater reached on an error against Postlewait, then Jason Donald hit a one-out homer to leftfield off reliever Kevin Gunderson.

Arizona righthander Koley Kolberg - son of former OSU football player Jeff Kolberg and grandson of former Beaver football player Elmer Kolberg - pitched eight innings for the win. Oregon State outhit Arizona 7-6 but the Beavers grounded into four double plays.

'I think everybody was swinging at his pitches,' said OSU shortstop Tony Calderon, who was 3-for-4. 'We stepped away from our game plan.'

Calderon, who has battled a season-long slump, had his second three-hit game in the Beavers' last four contests. Since March 19, he's raised his batting average from .164 to .235.

The Beavers took a 2-0 lead on Calderon's run-scoring single in the first inning and Aaron Mathews' run-scoring single in the fourth. After Mathews' single, OSU had a chance to break the game open as the Beavers still had runners at first and second with none out, but a flyout and a double play ended the inning.

'We've got to capitalize on situations like that Saturday and Sunday,' Calderon said. 'We've just got to come up clutch in situations like that.'

With OSU still up just two runs after the fourth inning, Arizona tied the game on Richard Mercado's solo homer in the fifth inning and Crowe's RBI single to left in the sixth. Kolberg also got the Beavers to hit into double plays in the fifth and sixth innings before Donald's homer made it 4-2.

Kolberg started the bottom of the ninth for Arizona but walked Shea McFeely to start the inning, and Arizona went to Derek Rodriguez. Calderon then blistered an infield single at third baseman Moises Duran, and Mathews' groundout to second moved the runners to second and third.

Andy Jenkins' groundout drove in McFeely to make it 4-3 and put pinch runner Tyler Graham at third with two out. Mike Hass walked to put the potential winning run on base, then Nelson drove Rodriguez's one-ball, two-strike pitch to Crowe for the final out.

McFeely was the only other Beaver with more than one hit, going 2-for-2 with a double as he extended his hitting streak to seven games. Jacoby Ellsbury saw the longest hitting streak of his career end at 13 games with an 0-for-3 night, but he also robbed Crowe of an extra-base hit with a long run and a reaching catch of a ball hit into the rightfield corner to end the fourth inning.
