No. 14 Arizona State Pitches Way To 10-3 Win Against Trojans

TEMPE, Ariz. - Jason Urquidez threw 8 1/3 scoreless innings before allowing three runs in the ninth Friday as the No. 14 Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the USC Trojans, 10-3, in Pac-10 Conference action at Packard Stadium. It was the first conference game of the season for the Trojans.
Urquidez (7-2) allowed only seven hits and struck out seven while allowing six walks. Pat Cassa mopped up in relief for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State is now 22-7 overall and 3-4 in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 13-15 overall, 0-1 in the Pac-10. The Sun Devils hammered out 17 hits, including a 4-for-5 night by second baseman Nick Walsh.
Sophomore shortstop Blake Sharpe went 4-for-5 with an RBI for the Trojans. Freshman right-hander Ian Kennedy (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked three.
ASU scored in the first on designated hitter Zechry Zinicola's RBI double to right center. Travis Buck was thrown out at home on the relay on Zinicola's double to end the inning. In the second, Kennedy intentionally walked shortstop Dustin Pedroia to load the bases with two outs and retired Walsh on a pop-up.
Tuffy Gosewisch made it a 4-0 lead for the Sun Devils in the fifth with a bases-loaded double down the left field line.
USC scored three in the ninth, thanks to a bases-loaded double by freshman Cyle Hankerd and RBI single by Sharpe.
