Simpson Leads OSU at Thunderbird
April 9, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz.- - Junior Brad Simpson fired a 5-under 139 in the first two rounds of the Thunderbird Invitational Friday to lead the Beavers at ASU's Karsten Golf Course. His opening-round 67 is a season-low and he sits in a tie for 16th with one round to play. OSU is tied for 15th with San Diego State after posting a 2-over 578.
Senior Sean Deacon is also under par after two rounds with a 3-under 141 and is tied for 25th.
'Simpson played well this morning and Deacon battled back and got his score back under par,' said head coach Brian Watts.
'Unfortunately we had to count a 75 in our morning round and that set us back a bit.'
Host and defending champion Arizona State leads the field with a 28-under 548, ten strokes ahead of three schools currently tied for second.
The Sun Devils were led by Alejandro Canizeras, who carded a 13-under 131 and leads by two strokes going into the final round.
First round leader Peter Tomasulo of California, who is currently tied for second, shot an opening-round 61, which set a course and tournament record. The previous record was 62, set by Jeff Quinney in 1999. Quinney later became the 2000 U.S. Amateur Champion.
Sophomore Brian Kelley, after opening with a 71, struggled in his afternoon round and is now tied for 71st with a 150.
'We need to find four guys that can score tomorrow,' Watts said.
'We are really putting ourselves behind here at the end of the season and need to have a good showing tomorrow. We'll have to move up some spots and beat the teams we need to beat.
'We'll play hard and see what happens.'
The final round begins Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. PST.
