Trojans Even Pac-10 Series In 11-4 Win Against California

LOS ANGELES - Senior Michael Moon broke open a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in the fourth Friday as the USC Trojans evened its Pac-10 Conference series with an 11-4 win over the California Golden Bears at Dedeaux Field. Moon went 4-for-5 with three RBI while Bret Butler threw six innings in relief to earn the win for the Trojans.
USC is now 16-16 overall and 3-2 in Pac-10 play while California is now 18-20 overall, 5-6 in the Pac-10.
Butler (4-1) entered the game in the third, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs with no walks and five strikeouts. Kyle Crist (3-6) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) in 4 1/3 innings. He replaced starter Brent Hale, who did not record an out in the first and faced three batters.
Moon is 6-for-10 in the first two games of the series with a home run and five RBI.
Cal took the lead in the second on solo home runs by James Holder and Allen Craig off USC stater Michael Friedman. Friedman allowed his first runs of the season, but still has a 0.96 ERA in 18 2/3 innings this season.
USC sophomore catcher Jeff Clement tied the game in the third with a solo blast over the scoreboard, his sixth of the season. Sophomore left fielder Baron Frost broke the game open in the seventh with a bases-loaded double to left center. Frost now has 17 doubles on the season and needs 12 to tie the school season record of 29, held by Brett Jenkins (1991).
The series will conclude tomorrow at 2 p.m. with Mike Padgett (2-4, 4.50) scheduled for the start for Cal while USC counters with Bobby Paschal (2-4, 4.95). The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
