Anastasia Kostina Shines At Peg Barnard Collegiate

STANFORD, Calif.- The sun in California is shining bright on sophomore Anastasia Kostina as she sits in a tie for second place and leads the Cougars after the first round of the Peg Barnard Collegiate at the par 72, 6, 159 yard Stanford Golf Course, Saturday.

Kostina opened the day shooting a 37 on the front nine, followed by a 35 on the back nine. The Nakhabino, Russia native recorded her personal best single round score of 72, one shot better than her previous record of 73, which she garnered March 9, at the Duck Invitational (Eugene, Ore.).

All American Kim Welch started off strong on the front nine shooting a 36 and garnered a total of 74 on the day. Welch currently sits in a four way tie for eighth place, just three shots out of the lead.

The Cougars faced some of the top teams in the nation, including No. 16 Washington, No. 21 Stanford, and No. 29 Oregon. The women shot a 308 (+20) after the first round and currently sit in sixth place, just one shot out of the top five and five shots out of second.

Maria Kostina sits in a five way tie for 31st place, just one shot out of the top 25 and five shots out of the top 10. Sophomore Stephanie Parsley bettered her score by five shots on the back nine and ended her day in a tie for 57th, while teammate Jay Lee Longbottom is knotted in a tie for 64th.

The final 18 holes of the Peg Barnard Collegiate will begin Sunday with a shotgun start at 6:30 a.m.
