Beavers Fall In Baseball Series Finale

April 10, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chris Campos homered twice but those hits accounted for all of Oregon State's runs in a 16-4 loss to second-ranked Stanford in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (19-11 overall, 4-5 Pacific-10) fell behind by seven runs in the top of the first inning and never got closer than four runs the rest of the way.

OSU now goes on the road for a non-league series at Washington with games Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

On Saturday, Stanford (25-5, 4-2) jumped to a 7-0 lead against Oregon State starter Dallas Buck in the top of the first inning, getting a three-run double from Danny Putnam and a three-run homer from Chris Carter. That blunted any momentum OSU had built during Friday's night's 5-4 victory.

'I don't have an answer for Dallas' start,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said of the freshman righthander, who had won at California and received no decision with a strong seven innings against Arizona since moving into the rotation. 'He's been very good in his last two outings and we expected him to give us a good start, and it didn't happen.'

The Beavers did come back to score three times in the bottom of the first inning, as Mike Lissman walked, Aaron Mathews doubled and Campos belted a homer to right-centerfield to make it 7-3. At that point, the crowd of 1,852 had reason to hope OSU might make a game of it over the final eight innings.

But Cardinal starter Jeff Gilmore managed to get out of the first inning without allowing another run, Stanford put up a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second to widen the lead to 9-3, and OSU couldn't get things going its way again during the afternoon.

'It really pains me to feel like our hitters didn't compete, because that's what we build our whole philosophy on - competing,' Casey said. 'I did not think we competed today at the plate at all.'

Gilmore and relievers Jeff Stimpson, Matt Leva and Greg Reynolds combined to record 12 strikeouts, including 10 in which the Beavers took a called third strike.

'Once it got into the middle of the game, they did a good job mixing their pitches up,' said Campos, who also had a solo homer off the rightfield foul pole in the fifth inning but struck out twice as well. 'They started to figure us out, mix it up and hit their spots.'

Campos was the second Beaver in as many days to have a two-homer game; Lissman had homered twice in OSU's Friday night win. Prior to that, the Beavers hadn't had a two-homer game by anyone since Andy Jarvis hit three in a March, 2001 game against Washington State.

'I knew they'd be pitching me in - they pitched me a lot of balls in,' Campos said. After not being in the starting lineup Thursday night, Campos entered the first game of the series when Jacoby Ellsbury was hurt diving for a ball in the first inning. After his first homer on Saturday, he'd reached base in seven straight plate appearances; he went 8-for-12 in the series with three homers, one double and seven runs batted in.

Aaron Mathews was the only other Beaver with more than one hit, going 2-for-5 with a double. That extended his current hitting streak to 10 games, the longest of the season for Mathews and the second-longest of 2004 by any Beaver behind Ellsbury's 13-game streak.

Saturday's crowd was the largest for a Beaver home game since the 1999 renovation of OSU's ballpark, and the series attendance of 4,947 was the most for a series since then. OSU is averaging 1,268 fans per home game this season and has drawn at least 1,000 fans nine times in 12 home dates, including the past six in a row.
