Cal Baseball Defeats USC, 12-9

LOS ANGELES - The California baseball team exploded for five runs in the sixth inning and added three runs in the seventh inning on the way to a 12-9 victory at USC Saturday at Dedeaux Field. The Golden Bears improved to 19-20 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10. USC fell to 16-17 overall and 3-3 in Pac-10 play. Cal ended up capturing the series, two games to one, winning 4-2 Thursday and losing 11-4 Friday. It was the first time the Bears had won a series at USC since 1986. Cal's victory over the Trojans on Thursday had snapped a 14-game losing streak for the Bears at Dedeaux Field.
Cal pounded out 12 hits and had three homers off of five USC pitchers. In the Bears' five run sixth inning, senior center fielder David Weiner led of with a solo home run, senior shortstop Jeff Dragicevich had a two-run single and later scored on a wild pitch, and junior third baseman Matt Einspahr had a RBI single.
Weiner hit his seventh homer of the season while junior left fielder Justin Nelson and junior designated hitter James Holder also homered for the Golden Bears. Junior right-hander Mike Padgett (3-4) earned the win with 5.7 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Junior Jesse Ingram earned his seventh save of the season and secondin three games after allowing one earned run on four hits in 2.3 innings (one walk, two strikeouts). Ingram now has 16 career saves, tying him with teammate Matt Brown for third on the Cal all-time save list.
USC's Bobby Paschal (2-5) took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits in 5.3 innings. Paschal struck out five and walked three batters.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Weiner caught a shallow fly ball in center field and threw out Trojan first baseman Joey Metropoulos at the plate for the inning-ending double play. Cal scored a run in the fifth on a RBI double by junior second baseman David Nicholson before adding five runs in the sixth. Nelson hit a two-run shot to right in the seventh inning, followed by Holder's solo shot to center.
The Bears will next host San Jose State, Tuesday, Apr. 13 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal will then travel to No. 1 ranked Stanford for a three-game series at Sunken Diamond, beginning Friday, Apr. 16 at 6 p.m.
