Cal Loses to Arizona State, 6-1

April 10, 2004

TEMPE, Ariz. - The California men's tennis team ended a difficult stretch of the schedule by losing to Arizona State, 6-1, in a Pac-10 match on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. It was the fourth straight road loss for the Golden Bears in April, with those losses sandwiched around a big win over No. 10 Stanford at home on April 6. Cal won a point in singles action, but Arizona State claimed the other five singles matches and the doubles-point to earn the team victory.

With the loss, Cal drops to 7-14 overall and 3-7 in the Pac-10, while Arizona State improves to 8-11 overall, 2-10 in the Pac-10.

The lone bright spot for the Bears in singles competition came as senior Wayne Wong defeated Arizona State's Andy Columbo on court two, 6-1, 6-2. In double's play, Cal's No. 21-ranked team of Balazs Veress and Patrick Briaud defeated Arizona State's Jonathan Kinsella and Chris Stewart, 8-6. The Sun Devils won the other two doubles matches to take the team point. The match was delayed 90 minutes because of rain.

The Bears return home to host their final home stand of the 2004 season vs. No. 3 USC, Friday, April 16, at 1:30 p.m. and vs. No. 4 UCLA, Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m.
