California Takes Series With 12-9 Win At USC

LOS ANGELES - David Weiner's leadoff home run in the sixth led to a five-run inning Saturday as the California Golden Bears earned the Pac-10 Conference series win with a 12-9 victory against the host USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. Weiner hit his seventh homer of the season while Justin Nelson and James Holder also homered for the Golden Bears.

Cal improves to 19-20 on the season with a 6-6 mark in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 16-17 overall and 3-3 in conference.

Mike Padgett (3-4) earned the win with 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Jesse Ingram earned his seventh save of the season and second in three games after allowing a run on five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

USC's Bobby Paschal (2-5) took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Paschal struck out five and walked three batters.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Weiner caught a shallow fly ball in center and threw out Trojan first baseman Joey Metropoulos at the plate for the inning-ending double play. Cal scored a run in the fifth on an RBI double by second baseman David Nicholson before adding five in the sixth.

Nelson hit a two-run shot to right in the seventh, followed by Holder's solo shot to center.

Baron Frost went 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Trojans while third baseman Billy Hart had a 3-for-5 day with two RBI.

The Trojans host Pepperdine on Tuesday (April 13) at 7 p.m. before traveling to Washington State for a Pac-10 Conference series next weekend. All four games will be broadcast live on
