Cougars' Second Varsity Eight Defeats Washington

April 10, 2004

SEATTLE, Wash.-- On a clear Saturday morning, the Washington State women's rowing second varsity eight beat the Huskies in a 2000 meter race as part of a dual regatta at Montlake Cut in Seattle.

The Cougars avenged last weeks' loss to the Huskies' second varsity eight in the San Diego Crew Classic. The Cougs finished with a time of 6:25.8, finishing seven seconds in front of Washington.

In the varsity eight race, the Cougars - ranked No. 12 in the US Rowing/NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll - fell to No. 7 Washington. The Huskies rowed a time of 6:21, while the Cougars finished with a time of 6:24.5.

'The varsity eight boat showed some toughness today, and the second varsity eight boat raced beautifully,' said WSU Head Rowing Coach Jane LaRiviere. 'The races we lost were by a small margin, we look forward to chipping away at that margin over the next few weeks.'

The Huskies captured the top two positions in the varsity four race. The Cougars' varsity four 'A' boat rowed a time of 7:31 to finish third, while WSU's varsity four 'B' rowed a time of 7:35 to round out the race. Washington's varsity four 'A' boat rowed a time of 7:20 to win the race.

'We improved from last week and we're headed in the right direction,' said WSU Varsity Four Coach Janey Charlton.

WSU's novice eight and third novice eight also raced, but were unable to defeat the Huskies. The Cougars' novice eight 'A' rowed a time of 6:51.64, finishing eight seconds behind the Huskies 'A' boat. The Cougars' novice eight boat closed the gap between them and UW by over three seconds from last weekend's time in San Diego versus Saturday's time.

'I'm pleased with how both novice boats raced,' Said WSU Novice Coach Vita Scaglione. 'We accomplished our goal of lessening the margin of defeat between last weekend and this weekend, we're very excited about racing against Oregon State in two weeks.'

In the third novice eight match-up, WSU rowed a time of 7:29, while UW's 'B' boat clocked a time of 7:04 to take first.

The Cougars return to action when they host their only home event of the spring season at Wawawai Landing, April 24 against Tennessee and Oregon State.
