Pitching Staff Leads Bruins to 4-3 Win Over Arizona
April 9, 2004
UCLA (18-13, 3-2) held Arizona (15-15-1, 4-4) to only five hits as the Bruins claimed a 4-3 win in front of 776 fans at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium on Friday night.
Bruin starter Casey Janssen improved to 6-2 on the season as he allowed only three hits in 7.2 innings of work. The senior right-hander allowed three runs, but only one earned run. He struck out six Wildcats.
A lead-off single from Brett McMillan in the second inning would turn into the first Bruin run. Preston Griffin would follow McMillan with a ground ball to third base, but a bad throw from Moises Duran would leave Griffin on and move McMillan to second. Wes Whisler would bring McMillan home with a RBI-single to right field.
After Arizona scored three runs in the bottom of the second, UCLA came back in the top of the third to post another run. Mike Svetlic went all the way to third base on another error from Duran and would cross home plate on a sacrifice fly from Ryan McCarthy.
In the fourth, the Bruins evened the score at 3-3 when Whisler started the inning with a double to center field. He would score on a single to left field from Anthony Norman.
The Bruins would reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth when Matt Thayer led off the frame with a single to right field. Thayer would be thrown out at second on a fielder's choice from McCarthy. McCarthy would go to second on a balk and move to third on a ground out. He would eventually score on a wild pitch from Arizona starter Kevin Guyette.
The Bruin bullpen kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the late innings. In the ninth, four UCLA pitchers combined to retire the side. Adam Simon posted his team-leading third save as he forced Jason Donald to ground into a bases-loaded fielder's choice for the final out of the game.
Whisler led the team with two hits, while McCarthy and Norman joined Whisler with the team's RBIs on the night.
UCLA and Arizona will wrap-up the three-game series tomorrow in a 1:00 p.m. match-up. Junior left-hander Wes Whisler will get the start on the mound for UCLA.
