UW Wins 8 of 9 Races in WSU Dual Regatta
April 10, 2004
SEATTLE - Washington crews won eight of nine races Saturday morning, including the featured women's varsity eight clash during the annual dual regatta with Washington State on the Montlake Cut.
The top UW women's crew, ranked seventh nationally, defeated the No. 12 Cougars by just over one boat length. The Huskies covered the 2,000-meter course in 6-minutes, 21-seconds followed by WSU in 6:25.
Washington swept all four men's races without the services of its top two crews. The Huskies won the varsity eight event by 13 seconds with a winning time of 5:56. The Cougars finished in 6:09.
The Husky men's junior varsity eight and varsity four crews posted similar lopsided triumphs, each winning by 13-second margins. The JV eights clocked a time of 6:09 followed by the Cougars in 6:22. The Husky four finished in 6:36 and WSU was timed in 6:49.
The Huskies were impressive in the freshman men's competition as three boats placed ahead of the lone WSU entry. UW's first freshman boat finished in 6:01 followed by the UW 'C' crew at 6:05, UW 'B' at 6:18 and the Cougars in fourth at 6:21.
Washington State's only win came in the women's junior varsity competition, an event they also won last season. The race featured a rematch of last weekend's San Diego Crew Classic when the Huskies finished second to California and nearly two seconds ahead of the third-place Cougars. WSU avenged that setback Saturday with an open-water victory. The Cougars were timed in 6:26 followed by Washington in 6:33.
A pair of Husky crews finished ahead of the WSU entries in the women's varsity four race. The top UW boat finished in 7:20, followed by the second UW entry in 7:23 and WSU in 7:31.
The Washington women also registered victories in a pair of novice eight competitions. The Huskies' top novice boat registered a two-boat length decision in the primary novice competition, finishing in 6:44. WSU was second in 6:52.
Washington boats finished one-two in the third-novice eight event, crossing the finish line in 7:04 and 7:13. The Cougars placed third with a time of 7:29.
The second-ranked Husky men's varsity eight competes next Saturday (April 17) on the Montlake Cut in the annual W Cup competition against Wisconsin. The No. 5 Badgers won last season in Madison for the first time in the 11-year history of the dual regatta against Washington.
