Varsity Eight Pulls Victory over Minnesota

April 10, 2004

Marina del Rey, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team competed against Minnesota today, defeating the Golden Gophers in the Varsity Eight competition. In the second annual meeting between the two teams, the Bruins tied the varsity eight series at 1-1.

The dual meet, which began at 4:00 p.m., featured races between varsity eights and novice eights. UCLA raced two boats in each event while Minnesota travelled only one crew for each event. The course was raced in the opposite direction to avoid the prevailing headwind and strong incoming current. There was a moderate tailwind and current along the course for both races.

In the Novice Eights competition, the UCLA N8+ started off very quickly, gaining a few seats over Minnesota and the UCLA 2N8+. As the Bruins settled into their rhythm, Minnesota demonstrated their length and power as they pulled forward and took the lead. Minnesota would win the 2000m race by open water in 6:43.3, 9-seconds over the UCLA novice eight boat in 6:52.6. The UCLA second novice eight boat followed in 7:19.5.

In the Varsity Eights competition, the UCLA varsity eight managed to gain a slight advantage over Minnesota and the UCLA second varsity eight, despite some trouble off the strart. The Bruins progressed along the race, extending their lead by as many as eight seats over Minnesota. The Golden Gophers tried to make a move before the last 500m, but the Bruins countered and would win by about seven seats. The UCLA varsity eight finished in 6:36.7, 3-seconds ahead of Minnesota in 6:39.8. The UCLA second varsity eight followed in 6:53.1.

With the victory over Minnesota, the UCLA varsity eight extended their dual-meet record to 3-1. Rowing in the Bruin varsity eight was Rogers (stroke), Liz Pallas-Jacobs, Elizabeth Felter, Monica Grova, Dawn Regan, Lexi Harmon, Jessica Fritz, Irene Condella, and Emina Ong (cox).

Concluding the races, UCLA held a reception for the visiting Minnesota team.

The Bruins return to action next Saturday, Apr. 17, at the Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif., where they face Oregon State and Kansas State in dual-meet competition.
