Rowing Wins Two Of Three At GW Invitational
April 10, 2004
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Just two seconds kept the USC women's rowing team from making a clean sweep of all three races at the 17th Annual George Washington Invitational Crew Classic, Saturday on the Potomac River. The Trojans took first place in both the Varsity Four and JV Eight races, while the Varsity Eight crew finished two seconds behind Tennessee for second place.
The eight-team regatta, hosted by George Washington, was run on four lanes on a 2,000 meter course, which concluded at the Kennedy Center.
It was an exceptional showing for the Women of Troy, who were racing in unfamiliar cold East-Coast conditions against some of the nation's top programs. A cool and cloudy morning with temperatures in the 50s gave way to a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the low 60s. Rowers had near-ideal racing conditions with a slight tailwind and a moderate tail-current.
All three USC boats won their preliminary heats and advanced to the afternoon's grand final races.
The Varsity Fours were the first to complete the day as USC edged Tennessee by nearly four seconds to finish first in a time of 7:15.60. The Trojans sprinted at the start, gaining a sizeable lead after the first 500 meters, then maintaining the advantage for the win.
The Women of Troy's JV Eight crew followed the lead set by the Fours. USC again found itself in a head-to-head battle with the Volunteers, but this time edged Tennessee by more than six seconds for the win. The Trojans finished in 6:46.60. Tennessee clocked in at 6:53.22.
The day ended just as it began, with USC and Tennessee fighting to the finish in the Varsity Eight grand final. This time it was the Volunteers who, after trailing through the first 1,500 meters, pulled ahead in the final 250 meters to cross the line 2.23 seconds ahead of the Trojans. USC finished in 6:33.13, nearly 10 seconds ahead of third-place Iowa.
