Cal Concludes Spring Practice with Annual Blue-Gold Game

BERKELEY, Calif. - Saturday's annual Blue and Gold Spring Game will have something for everybody.

For head coach Jeff Tedford and his coaching staff, it will be the last time before August training camp to evaluate their Golden Bears football team.

For Cal's players, it will culminate four weeks and 15 practices of spring football, giving them one last chance to impress Tedford and their position coaches.

And for fans, it's an opportunity to enjoy a sun-drenched day of football at idyllic Memorial Stadium and take advantage of several promotions provided by the school's marketing department. While the Spring Game's situational scrimmage format will offer plenty of action and excitement, beginning at 12 noon, the fun starts even sooner.

Admission is free to the event and includes:

  • Free food, furnished by Baja Fresh and West Coast Pizza, will be made available at the 'Picnic Zone' while supplies last, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
  • The historic California Victory Cannon will be moved from Tightwad Hill and be on display at the north entrance of Memorial Stadium, available for photo opportunities.
  • The 2003 Insight Bowl Championship trophy will also be featured at the Athletic Ticket Office table, presenting another photo op for fans.
  • Oski, the school's beloved Bear mascot, the Cal Band and spirit groups will also make special appearances.
  • During a halftime drawing, a lucky fan will also win a trip to Los Angeles to attend Cal's road game against 2003 national co-champion USC in the L.A. Memorial Coliseum Oct. 9.
  • Other haltime drawings will reward fans with merchandise and other giveaway prizes.

    The Spring Game coincides with many other activities on the Berkeley campus on Saturday.The university is staging its annual Cal Day, which welcomes thousands of visitors to campus, while other Golden Bear athletic events include men's tennis vs. UCLA (12 noon), softball vs. Arizona (2 p.m.) and the rugby national quarterfinals vs. Bowling Green (2 p.m.).
