No. 15 Softball Hosts Double-Header With Portland State

No. 15 SOFTBALL HOSTS DOUBLE-HEADER WITH PORTLAND STATE; BEAVERS AND VIKINGS WILL MEET IN CORVALLIS AT 2 P.M. ON TUESDAY

SCOUTING PORTLAND STATE: Portland State enters the week with a 13-22 overall record. Annie Peccia leads the team with a .415 batting average and 17 runs scored. Four Viking players are batting above .300 on the year, as Rose Rutledge chips in a .333 clip from the plate and Maggie DeWall and Erin Stokey are hitting .317 and .311, respectively. Vanessa Holm leads the squad with a 2.16 ERA in 16 appearances. PSU is coming off a double-header sweep against Pacific Coast Softball Conference foe University of San Diego.

BEAVERS AND VIKINGS SERIES NUMBERS: Oregon State leads the all-time series with Portland State, 60-27-1 and is 21-5 against the Vikings with Kirk Walker at the helm. OSU had won nine straight games against PSU until the Vikings earned a 3-1 victory in the second game of a double header on May 1, 2003.

AT LEAST WE'RE EVEN: Over the last seven years Oregon State has swept the season series against Portland State one season and then dropped a game to the Vikings the next year. OSU swept the series with PSU in 1998, 2000 and 2002, while dropping a game to the Vikings during the 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003 campaigns.

FAST FACT: Oregon State has recorded 14 no-hitters in school history - three of the no-hitters have come against Portland State, including two in back-to-back seasons (2002 and 2003).

BEAVERS IN THE TOP 25: Oregon State moved up one more notch to the No. 15 spot in the April 7 USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Poll. The Beavers hold a 4-2 record against opponents ranked in the Top 10 so far this season. Seven of the eight Pacific-10 Conference teams rank in the Top 25; 1. Arizona, 2. UCLA, 4. California, 7. Washington, 11. Stanford, 14. Oregon, 15. Oregon State.

LOOKING LONG: Oregon State is 23-1 on the season in games that at least one Beaver player hits a home run.

THAT'S WHY SHE'S BOOMER: Sophomore catcher Lisa Allen has hit a home run in four of the last five games. Allen has belted seven home runs on the season and her 11 career long balls rank in ninth place in the OSU record book.

OSU SOFTBALL COMPLEX: Oregon State currently holds a 29-17 all-time record in games played at the OSU Softball Complex, including an 8-1 mark this season. The Beavers boast an 11-16 mark against opponents ranked in the Top 25.

THE WORD ON WALKER: Head coach Kirk Walker is in his 10th season at the helm for the Beavers. Walker, a graduate of UCLA, has turned around Oregon State's softball program to make it a contender on a national scale. Walker has led the Beavers to five consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament appearances. The winningest coach in program history, Walker, has an overall coaching record of 325-276-3 and a 66-158 mark in the Pacific-10 Conference. He earned his 300th career victory when Oregon State completed a perfect game in an 8-0 victory against Saint Mary's on Feb. 8, 2004. Walker was selected as one of just 12 coaches named to the USA Softball National Team Coaches Pool, and will serve as an assistant coach for the USA Elite Team. Prior to his arrival at Oregon State, Walker spent 11 seasons at national powerhouse UCLA as a manager and assistant coach. During his time in Westwood, the Bruins won six NCAA titles and made 10 appearances in the College World Series.
