Hass' Single Gives Beavers Two-Game Sweep

April 13, 2004

SEATTLE, Wash. - Mike Hass' two-out, two-run single in the top of the 12th inning pushed Oregon State past Washington 6-4 in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Husky Ballpark. Jared Sanders pitched a scoreless final 1 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win for OSU (21-11 overall, 4-5 Pacific-10) in the four-hour, 40-minute game.

OSU goes to Sacramento State for a non-league series this weekend with games Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

Tuesday's win assured Oregon State of at least a split of its season series with Washington (19-12-1, 5-4); OSU has won all three meetings thus far with a three-game Pac-10 series set for April 30-May 2 in Corvallis.

Hass' game-winning hit came with two outs and the bases loaded as he drove a one-ball, one-strike pitch from Kyle Parker back up the middle to score Aaron Mathews and pinch-runner Jake Postlewait.

'That's a real long day,' said Hass, who has been slumping in recent weeks. 'I pretty much just went up there looking for a single; that's all we needed. He threw one from the middle out and I just kind of went with it. That felt good after the horrible swings I took my first three at-bats; those were ugly.

'I was just thinking, 'Get it done,' because we needed to get out of here - we need to get this win, get home and go to school tomorrow.'

The win gave the Beavers a sweep of the two-game series, their first sweep in Seattle since taking a pair of non-conference games early in the 2000 season. OSU played Tuesday's game without outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Lissman and second baseman Chris Kunda because of injuries.

'We were definitely missing some pieces, but we're pretty deep on this team,' Hass said. 'When we all pull together, we can get it done without those guys.'

OSU led 2-1 for much of the game and pushed that to 3-1 on Mathews' run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning; that extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Washington got a home run from Aaron Hathaway in the bottom of the eighth, though, and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Nick Batkoski's one-out double down the rightfield line and Hathaway's two-out, no-ball, two-strike bloop single to right off OSU reliever Nathan Pendley.

OSU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th on Paul Richie's two-out single to right, but the Huskies evened the game when Hathaway hit into a fielder's choice to plate the tying run. Sanders then came on with the bases loaded and two out and got Matt Lane to pop up his first pitch to end the inning.

The Beavers had been hitless until the fifth inning against UW righthander Tim Lincecum, when Andy Jenkins grounded a two-out single back up the middle. Lincecum, the Pac-10 strikeout leader, went five innings and gave up just one hit but walked nine and hit one batter while striking out 10.

OSU turned to outfielder/designated hitter Chris Campos to make the pitching start. The senior lefthander went 2 2/3 innings and allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out two.
