April 13, 2004
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf junior varsity team carded a four-over-par 284 Tuesday and finished in seventh place at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Arizona's final-round 284 was its best tally of the 54-hole event, but it was not enough to move the squad up in the standings. The Wildcats finished seventh in the field of 18 teams with an 857 (+17) total. UCLA's junior varsity won the event with an 829 (-1) total, the only team in the field to finish under par.
Freshman Brian Prouty was the top-finishing Wildcat, as the Tucson product earned his first career top-10 finish. Prouty posted a three-round total of 209 (-1), which included a final-round 69, en route to a tie for eighth place. It was the lowest tournament total of his career, while the third-round 69 was his second career round in the 60s. Prouty finished five strokes behind individual medalist Travis Bertoni of Cal Poly.
The Four remaining Wildcats in the field finished above par for the tournament. Ben Marsh finished tied for 28th place at 215 (+5), Kipp Riehle tied for 33rd place at 216 (+6), while Billy Whalen tied for 38th place at 217 (+7). Rounding out the UA contingent was Brett Carter, who tied for 71st place at 225 (+15).
The Wyoming Cowboy Classic was held at Talking Stick Golf Course, a par 70, 7,133-yard layout.
The UA junior varsity has completed competition for the 2003-04 season. The Arizona varsity will next be in action on April 26-28, as the squad hosts the 2004 Pacific-10 Conference Championships at The Gallery at Dove Mountain's North Course.
