No. 4 Bears Claim Victory at Santa Clara, 5-0
April 13, 2004
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore P Kristina Thorson allowed no hits in five innings of work to lead No. 4 California to a 5-0 victory over Santa Clara University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play at Marsalli Park. The Bears outhit the Broncos 8-1, including a five hit, four run fifth inning to secure the win.
California (36-6, 3-3 Pac-10) made the most of two Broncos errors in the top of the fifth frame, but as it turned out, all the Bears needed was the inning's lead-off homerun from sophomore C Haley Woods. Up until that swing, the match had remained scoreless and hitless.
It didn't get any better for Santa Clara (18-23, 4-4 PCSC) after that, as junior 2B Jessica Pamanian followed Woods with a double to center field and advanced to third on a bunt single from junior SS Chelsea Spencer. Spencer stole second, and on the ensuing Bronco throwing error Pamanian crossed the plate. Senior 1B Roni Rodrigues reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an attempted pick-off by Santa Clara aimed at Spencer. The officials ruled obstruction on the Bronco defense, and Spencer scored.
One out later, Cal added another run with an RBI single from freshman RF Alex Sutton. With two outs, the Bears loaded the bases: junior 3B Vicky Galindo reached on a fielder's choice, sophomore LF Lindsay James reached on an error and junior CF Kaleo Eldredge registered an infield single. Woods, at bat again, recorded the third out. The inning ended with four California runs on five hits and two Bronco errors.
Back-to-back singles in the sixth from Spencer and junior Gwen Arafiles, pinch-hitting for Rodrigues, led to another California run.
Santa Clara notched its first hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh when sophomore 2B Jenny Brown connected for a lead-off single to left field. The rally was short-lived, however, as junior P Kelly Anderson responded by striking out the side.
The Bears remain home for the weekend, hosting Pac-10 competitors Arizona State on Friday, April 16, at 2 p.m. before taking on No. 1 Arizona Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18, at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively. All three homes games will be played at Levine-Fricke Field.
Saturday's game against the Wildcats is also Cal Softball Alumnae Day. The Bears will be honoring all 1970s players, many of whom are expected to be in attendance, prior to the game. Each player will also receive a Big C award. A barbecue and special program are scheduled to begin immediately following the game at the Strawberry Canyon Haas Club House. Tickets are available through the Cal Athletics Department by calling (510) 643-1299.
