Trojans Double Up Waves With 8-4 Victory
April 13, 2004
LOS ANGELES - Freshman Cyle Hankerd went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI Tuesday as the USC Trojans defeated the Pepperdine Waves, 8-4, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. Junior Michael Friedman threw three innings, allowing only one unearned run, with five strikeouts to earn the win.
Friedman has allowed only two earned runs in 21 2/3 innings this season for the Trojans.
USC and Pepperdine now have identical 17-17 records overall.
Hankerd led off the fifth with his first collegiate home run to right center. Blake Sharpe reached on a walk before Pepperdine brought in reliever Mike Craig. Michael Moon reached on a fielding error by center fielder Luke Salas and advanced to third on a single by sophomore catcher Jeff Clement, scoring Sharpe. A sacrifice fly by Joey Metropoulos scored Moon for the third run of the inning.
Friedman entered the game in the top of the fifth with runners at first and second. He walked Salas to load the bases, but retired the next three batters to get out of the jam. The Waves also left the bases loaded in the eighth inning and stranded 10 runners on the evening.
The Trojans travel to Pullman, Wash., this weekend for a Pac-10 series at Washington State beginning on Friday (April 16) at 3 p.m. The series will continue on Saturday (April 17) at 3 p.m. and conclude on Sunday (April 18) at noon. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
