WSU Suffers 8-5 Loss To Gonzaga

Washington State's Zach McAngus drove home two of WSU's five runs, going 3-for-4, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars lost to Gonzaga 8-5 Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton Field, giving up the lead in the seventh inning.
Washington State relief pitcher Brett Beetham (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars (21-11), entering the game in the sixth inning for starter Brett Sommer. Beetham allowing three runs, all earned, and three hits, while Sommer gave up 10 hits and four runs, but just two earned runs.
Starting pitcher Matt Reding (1-1) earned the win for Gonzaga (12-21), allowing five runs, all earned, and 10 hits. Nate William's threw the last two innings and earned the save.
Going into the seventh inning, the Bulldogs were trailing WSU 5-4, but took the lead for good, scoring three runs with three hits. David Johnson drove home Jeff Culpepper and Kiel Thibault with a triple to right center. Johnson then scored on a wild pitch. In the ninth Johnson added another Bulldog run with a solo long ball.
The Cougars held Gonzaga scoreless while gathering a 3-0 lead over the first three innings, with two runs in the first and a single in the third.
Kaeo Rubin, who singled to start the game, scored when Jay Miller singled to right center one out later. Miller then scored on a double by Grant Richardson. Richardson scored the third WSU run in the third inning off a double down the left-field line by Zach McAngus.
Gonzaga would score two runs in the fourth to bring the Bulldogs within one run 3-2. Culpepper drove home Marshall Bratton with a double, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Carlson.
WSU added to its lead by matching Gonzaga's two runs, making the score 5-2 in the fifth. Miller doubled to right field and then scored his second run of the game when McAngus singled one batter later. Zach Franklin hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Richardson for the final Cougar run.
WSU will return to Bailey-Brayton Field Friday at 3:00 p.m. to take on Southern California for the first of a three-game conference series.
