Rowing Duals Oregon State at Stanford Invitational
April 14, 2004
Los Angeles - The UCLA women's rowing team travels to Redwood Shores, Calif., this Saturday, Apr. 17, to dual Oregon State at the Stanford Invitational. This is UCLA's first ever dual meet against the Beavers, who finished ahead of the Bruin varsity eight at last year's Pac-10 Championships.
Both UCLA and Oregon State will enter a varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, and novice eight boat in Saturday's competition. UCLA's first race is the Varsity Eight scheduled for 12:50 p.m.
The Bruins were also scheduled to dual Kansas State, but the Wildcats cancelled their invitation.
The UCLA varsity eight last faced Oregon State at the 2003 Pac-10 Rowing Championships (May 18). The Bruins finished fourth behind the Beaver in Heat 2 of the prelims. The Bruin second varsity eight and varsity four also finished behind Oregon State, but the UCLA novice eight was crown Pac-10 Champions.
The UCLA novice eight faced Oregon State this season at the 31st Annual San Diego Crew Classic. Both crews met in the Novice Eight Grand Final (Apr. 4), where they also competed against Washington, California, Washington State, and Clemson. The Beavers finished the race in fourth, and the Bruins followed in sixth.
Last week, UCLA hosted Minnesota (Apr. 10) in a dual-meet competition. The Bruins surprised the Golden Gophers with a victory in the Varsity Eight competition, but UCLA dropped the Novice Eight race to a Minnesota crew that has gone undefeated all season. With the victory, the UCLA varsity eight improved their dual-meet record to 3-1.
Oregon State Notes
Oregon State has competed in only two events this season. The Beavers hosted the University of Victoria (Mar. 13) in dual-meet racing action, winning the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Novice Eight, and Second Novice Eight competitions. Victoria's only victory came in the Varsity Four event.
The Beavers also trekked to the San Diego Crew Classic (Apr. 3-4). Oregon State finished 10th in the Jessop-Whittier Cup, sixth in the Women's JV Grand Final, and fourth in the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final.
Oregon State will also dual California at this year's Stanford Invitational.
