Liz Towne-Gilbert To Join Women's Volleyball Staff

LOS ANGELES -- Liz Towne-Gilbert, the associate head coach at UC Santa Barbara for the past two seasons who also spent four years at Arizona, has been named associate head coach for the defending national champion USC women's volleyball team, head coach Mick Haley announced today.

Towne-Gilbert, 36, replaces Paula Weishoff, who resigned in February to take the head coaching position at Concordia. She share recruiting responsibilities and be involved in all facets of program development.

'Liz has gained a world of experience by working herself up the ladder throughout her career,' said Haley. 'She is very talented when it comes to training in the gym and recruiting, as well being a great communicator. I think she will be a perfect fit on our staff.'

'I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work at USC and under Mick Haley,' said Gilbert-Towne. 'I'm really looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.'

Under UCSB head coach Kathy Gregory, Towne-Gilbert helped guide her alma mater to two Big West Conference championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2002. UCSB was ranked as high as No. 8 in 2002 and compiled a 49-12 overall record during her tenure.

Towne-Gilbert boasts nine years of coaching experience at the Division I level. She began her collegiate coaching career in 1991 at South Florida before accepting a similar position at Arizona in 1992. She spent four years (1992-95) in Tucson and helped lead the Wildcats to three NCAA Regional appearances (1993-95) during that time.

She then was an assistant at Sacramento State for two seasons (1998-99). The Hornets captured the Big Sky Conference championship in 1998 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during both of her seasons.

Towne-Gilbert also possesses experience at the club volleyball level. In Arizona, she helped found the 'Zona Volleyball Club and, before joining the UCSB staff, she served as club director of the Davis (Calif.) Volleyball Club in 2000 and 2001.

As a setter at UC Santa Barbara (1985-88), Towne-Gilbert remains the Gauchos' leader in career assists with 5,542 and ranks fifth with 1,256 career digs. She earned AVCA All-Region honors as a senior in 1988 and was a member of the United States Volleyball Association National Team in 1987. She spent time playing professionally in Europe in 1991 and made a brief return to the circuit in 1996 following her time at Arizona.

She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from UCSB in 1989.

Towne-Gilbert was born on Oct. 27, 1967, in Davis, Calif. She and her husband, Wayne Gilbert, currently reside in Montecito.
