Cal Baseball Loses at No. 2 Stanford, 7-4

STANFORD, CA - The California baseball team hit three home runs off of Stanford pitcher Mark Romanczuk, yet still fell to the No. 2 ranked Cardinal, 7-4, Friday night at Sunken Diamond. The Golden Bears go to 20-21 overall and 6-7 in the Pac-10. Stanford, 13-1 in home games this season, improved to 27-5 and 5-2 in league play.

Three of Cal's five hits against Romanczuk (7-1, 7.0 innings, five hits, four runs, three walks, two strikeouts) were round trippers. Senior shortstop Jeff Dragicevich hit his third home run of the season with a ball hit down the left field line in the top of the third inning. Senior right fielder Brian Horwitz hit his fifth homer of the year with a shot hit to left center. Senior center fielder David Weiner gave the Bears their third and fourth runs with a two-run homer over the right field fence in the eighth inning. It was Weiner's team-leading eighth home run of the season.

Cal's other hits were a single up the middle by junior third baseman Matt Einspahr in the third inning and a looping single to left field by junior left fielder Justin Nelson in the sixth inning. After Romanczuk gave up the two-run homer to Weiner in the eighth, freshman Jeff Stimpson earned his first collegiate save, pitching the final 2.0 innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

The losing pitcher for Cal was sophomore starter Adam Gold (6-4), who threw 5.0 innings with nine hits, six runs, two walks and one strikeout. After Stanford scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk by Jed Lowrie and a RBI single by Danny Putnam off of Cameron Johnson, junior reliever Matt Swanson was able to come in and strikeout John Mayberry, Jr. with the bases loaded. Swanson went on to pitch a solid 2.3 innings with one hit, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts.

The Cardinal had scored two runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Brian Hall and Chris Minaker. Stanford added three more runs in the fourth inning on RBI single by Chris Carter, a fielder's choice RBI by Minaker and a sacrifice fly to center field by Jonny Ash.

The Bears next travel to Stanford for the second game of the three-game series, Saturday, Apr. 17 at 1 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
