Everything's Jake As OSU Wins Third Straight

April 16, 2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Jake Postlewait and Jake McCormick combined to pitch a six-hitter as Oregon State beat Sacramento State 7-2 in non-league baseball Friday afternoon at Hornet Field. Aaron Mathews was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in for the Beavers (22-11 overall, 4-5 Pacific-10), who won their third straight game.

OSU and Sacramento State (22-23) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude it Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

On Friday, Postlewait improved his record to 8-1 this season; that's the most victories for an OSU pitcher since Scott Nicholson won 11 games in 2001. Postlewait scattered five hits over seven-plus innings, giving up two runs as he walked four and struck out six; it was his highest number of strikeouts since fanning eight against Utah on Opening Day Feb. 13.

'Jake Postlewait pitched very well,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'The strike zone was very, very tight and you've got to make the adjustment, and he did.'

Postlewait didn't allow a hit until Ryan Browne's one-out double in the fourth inning. After Mathews' two-run double staked the Beavers to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Postlewait walked two of the first three hitters he faced but helped himself by picking off the first of those.

The senior lefthander, who is 13-2 over the past two seasons, came back to record four straight outs on strikeouts in the first and second innings. That started a stretch in which Postlewait retired nine of 11 hitters, with one of those reaching base on an error.

Meanwhile, OSU outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was in the lineup for the first time since being injured diving for a ball on April 8; he singled up the middle to lead off the first inning. Paul Richie added another single and Chris Campos walked to load the bases, then Mathews' lined his double down the leftfield line to drive in two runs and extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

OSU also regained second baseman Chris Kunda, who had injured a finger bunting on April 10.

Sacramento State starter Ethan Katz, who entered the game with a 6-3 record and 3.65 earned run average, gave up two more runs in the third inning after he loaded the bases with three walks. Mike Hass singled to left-center to drive in one run, then Andy Jenkins drew another walk to force in the second run.

OSU tacked on another run in the fifth inning when Mathews stole home on the front end of a double steal with Tyler Graham. The Beavers made it 7-0 in the seventh on Jenkins' two-run single to right.

Oregon State left nine runners on base, though, including seven in scoring position.

'Defensively, we did some things right but we're fortunate that Postlewait gave us the outing he gave us because we did not do the job at the plate,' Casey said. 'Their guy (Katz) was very good, and we as a team were lackluster at the plate. We're not picking up runners, we're not putting crooked numbers on the board; we should have a lot more, which is going to take pressure off our starters and allow us to do some other things.

'I know we can be a good team; you've got to want it. You've got to push yourself. We've lost a little confidence at the plate with a player or two, and it seems that guy comes to the plate in the key situations.'

Sacramento State didn't score until the bottom of the seventh, when it put together three singles off Postlewait and finally got a two-out, run-scoring single by Ronnie Machado Jr. The Hornets' second run came when Brian Blauser led off the eighth with a homer to center off Postlewait.

That's when OSU went to the bullpen and McCormick gave the Beavers a strong finish on the mound, allowing just a groundball single and striking out three in his two innings of work.

Sacramento State's final pitcher of the day was Mel Cuckovich Jr.; his father was an infielder for Oregon State from 1971-73.
