John Meloan Pitches Wildcats Past Texas-Pan American, 12-5
April 16, 2004
TUCSON, Ariz.- Sophomore John Meloan recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in his second start of the season as the Arizona baseball team defeated Texas-Pan American 12-5 on Kindall Field on Friday. The win was Arizona's third straight and improved UA to 19-15-1 for the year.
Meloan (3-0), who snapped his previous career-high of eight punchouts set last week against UCLA, worked eight strong innings on Friday to pick up his third win of the year. He gave up five runs on 10 hits and fell just short of tossing Arizona's first complete game win of the year.
Combining with southpaw reliever Brad Mills, who came on in the ninth inning, the two Wildcat hurlers did not issue a walk to the Broncos. The effort marked the first time this season the UA pitching staff did not give up a free pass in a game.
Offensively all nine Arizona starters finished with at least one hit in the game, including a pair of doubles by sophomore Brad Boyer and freshman Bill Rhinehart's fourth home run of the year. Boyer, Rhinehart and sophomores Jordan Brown and Nick Hundley each finished with two RBI on the night.
UTPA's Justin Bogy (3-3) was charged with the loss after giving up eight runs on nine hits in four innings on the mound.
The two schools will meet up on Saturday at 7 pm for the second game of the three-game series. UA's Koley Kolberg is scheduled to start on the mound.
