No. 1 Softball Blanks Stanford in Six

April 16, 2004

STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Arizona softball team shut out No. 9 Stanford in six innings Friday night at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium, 8-0. The victory saw the Cats' undefeated Pac-10 run stretch to five games and marked Alicia Hollowell's 28th win without a loss.

Arizona's offense struck in the top of the first with a leadoff single to short by Caitlin Lowe, followed by a fielder's choice to Autumn Champion. With two on and no outs, Wendy Allen belted her sixth homer of the year over the centerfield wall to put the Cats up, 3-0.

The Cats touched up Cardinal starter Dana Sorensen (19-6) for another two runs in the second. With two out, Lowe singled to third base and Champion singled on a bunt and advanced to second when Lowe took third on the play. Wendy Allen drew a walk and Mackenzie Vandergeest singled to center, scoring Lowe and Champion.

Stanford pulled Sorensen in the third for pitcher Laura Severson, who held the Wildcats scoreless through the fifth, allowing just three hits. In the top of the sixth, Crystal Farley and Lowe were issued back-to-back walks and both advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, Wendy Allen stepped to the plate and ripped a single to right, scoring Farley and Lowe for her fourth and fifth RBI of the night.

Hollowell ended the night with three hits and seven strikeouts, knocking her ERA down to 0.99 and upping her strikeouts to 352, just 42 shy of her own record-setting single season mark.

The Cats will head to Berkeley to take on the No. 4 Cal Bears at Levine-Fricke Field at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
