No. 10 Cal Loses at No. 7 USC, 5-2

LOS ANGELES - The No. 10 California women's tennis team lost to No. 7 USC, 5-2, in a Pac-10 rematch at Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles. It was the first loss in four matches for the Golden Bears, who previously defeated USC, 6-1, in Berkeley two weekends ago. The Trojans won four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to earn the team victory.
With the loss, Cal falls to 16-7 overall, 4-3 in the Pac-10, while USC climbs to 16-5 overall and remains flawless at 7-0 in the Pac-10.
Among the bright spots for the Bears, Cal's No. 4-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones defeated USC's No. 15-ranked Luana Magnani, 6-4, 7-6 (3), in a closely contested battle on court one. With the victory, Kops-Jones raised her singles record this season to 22-4 overall, 15-3 in dual match competition. Earlier in the afternoon on court two, Cal's No. 40-ranked doubles team of Nicole Havlicek and Jody Scheldt defeated USC's Anca Anastasiu and Dianne Matias, 8-3.
The Golden Bears play their final regular season match of the 2004 season at No. 6 UCLA, Saturday, April 17, at 12 noon.
