No. 15 Softball Stumbles At No. 3 UCLA, 6-0
April 16, 2004
LOS ANGELES - No. 15 ranked Oregon State dropped a 6-0 decision against No. 3 UCLA in Friday's Pacific-10 Conference softball action.
OSU drops to 36-13 on the year and 2-4 in the Pac-10, while UCLA earned its first conference victory (1-4) and improved to 28-5 on the year.
UCLA jumped to an early lead after Caitlin Benyi sent Monica Hoffman's second pitch of the game over the right field fence. The Bruins added two more runs in the frame, behind five hits. Los Angeles, CA, native Ta'Tyana McElroy entered the game for the Beavers in relief and helped contain the bleeding, but UCLA held a 3-0 lead after one inning.
OSU loaded the bases in the third inning with Alana Mendoza drawing a walk, Natalie Johnson getting hit by a pitch and Adrienne Alo picking up an infield single, but the Beavers were unable to push any runs across the plate. Bruin All-American Keira Goerl forced a groundout and then recorded her third strikeout to end the threat.
McElroy breezed through the Bruin batters, retiring eight straight before Andrea Duran led-off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double to the gap in right-center field. The Bruins tacked three more runs on the board in the frame, taking advantage of a sacrifice fly and 2-RBI double by Lisa Dodd to make the score 6-0.
The Beavers got runners on base in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings but were unable to capitalize.
Mendoza finished the game with a 1-for-2 clip from the plate, extending her hitting streak to four games.
Oregon State heads to the airport as the Beavers travel to Seattle for a Saturday showdown with No. 5 University of Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the game broadcast live on Fox Sports Northwest.
