No. 28 Cal Falls to No. 3 USC, 5-2

BERKELEY - The No. 28 California men's tennis team lost to No. 3 USC, 5-2, in a Pac-10 rematch at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. It was the third-straight loss and the fifth loss in six matches for the Golden Bears since the beginning of April. Two weekends ago, Cal lost to USC, 7-0, in Los Angeles.

With the loss, Cal drops to 7-15 overall, 2-4 in the Pac-10, while USC improves to 19-2 overall and remains undefeated at 6-0 in the Pac-10. Cal's last victory was over No. 11 Stanford, 4-3, at home on April 6.

Cal managed to win the two showcase matches of the day, winning both the singles and doubles matches played on court one. In singles action, No. 118-ranked Cal senior Wayne Wong upset USC's No. 23-ranked Adriano Biasella, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. In doubles play, Cal's No. 21-ranked Balazs Veress and Patrick Briaud captured a hard-fought 9-8 victory over USC's Biasella and Johan Berg. The Trojans, however, earned the team victory with wins in the other two doubles matches and in four of the other five singles matches of the day.

The Golden Bears play their final home match of the 2004 season vs. No. 4 UCLA, Saturday, April 17. The match begins at 1:00 p.m. It will be the final home match for Cal seniors Kuni Minato, Balazs Veress, and Wayne Wong.
