No. 4 Cal Captures Late Win Over Visiting Arizona State, 1-0
April 16, 2004
BERKELEY, Calif. - California pulled out a classic one run, two hit bottom of the seventh 1-0 win over visiting Arizona State at Levine-Fricke Field Friday afternoon in Pac-10 Conference play. Junior 2B Jessica Pamanian singled in the winning run with two outs after a sharp leadoff double down the left field line by junior 3B Vicky Galindo put the game within reach.
Junior P Kelly Anderson tallied the win for the Bears, advancing her season record to 20-5, allowing only two hits in seven innings of work while notching seven strikeouts. Arizona State's junior P Bre DeSanta (9-8) took the loss, coming on in the fifth inning for the Sun Devils to relieve sophomore P Ashley Werschky.
Arizona State (30-19, 0-5) had scoring opportunities early in the contest, leaving two on in the top of the first following a triple and two walks, then leaving one on in the second after a left field single with two outs. That was it for the Sun Devils, as Anderson took over the game for Cal, denying Arizona State another base runner for the remainder of the game.
The Bears also had early opportunities, leaving three on in the second inning after a pair of Arizona State errors and stranding one in the third inning when junior CF Kaleo Eldredge took a pitch straight to the side of her head, later advancing to third on another Arizona State error. The bases were left loaded again in the fifth inning after a one out single to left from Galindo and another two errors from the Sun Devils put Bears on first and second, only to have the rally ended on a pair of strikeouts from DeSanta.
Anderson then dug deep for California (37-6, 4-3), recording three ground outs and three strikeouts in her final two innings at the helm, setting up the dramatic two out, bottom of the seventh victory. Galindo finished the game batting 3-for-4 with a stolen base, her team-leading 20th of the season.
California returns to Levine-Fricke Field tomorrow, Saturday, April 17, when the Bears host No. 1 Arizona at 2 p.m. for the first of two games this weekend against the Wildcats.
