Trojans Secure 4-2 Pac-10 Win At Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Ian Kennedy struck out eight batters in seven innings as the USC Trojans took the first game of a Pac-10 Conference series with a 4-2 win against the Washington State Cougars at Bailey-Brayton Field. Kennedy struck out the side twice in the third and the seventh innings to earn the win while Josh Rummonds earned his third save of the season, stranding the tying run at first in the ninth.

USC improves to 18-17 on the season and is now 4-3 in the Pac-10, a half game behind first-place Stanford. Stanford is hosting California in a 6 p.m. game tonight. Washington State is now 21-12 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-10.

After two straight losses, Kennedy (5-2) allowed a run on six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Aaron Trolia took the loss to drop to 4-3, despite allowing only a run through six innings.

On the season, Kennedy is 5-2 with a 2.48 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 61 2/3 innings.

In the top of the seventh, USC catcher Jeff Clement led off with a one-hopper that handcuffed first baseman Grant Richardson. Clement beat the throw to Trolia by a step with the fielding error charged to Richardson. USC scored two runs on the strength of three straight singles by Joey Metropoulos, Baron Frost and Billy Hart.

The Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Kennedy struck out Brandon Reddinger and pinch hitter Zach Franklin to end the threat. Blake Sharpe made it a 3-1 lead in the eighth for the Trojans with an RBI single, followed by a foul out by Metropoulos that scored Michael Moon from third.

Designated hitter Jeremy Farrar led off the WSU ninth with a single off reliever Jon Williams. Rummonds entered the game, but Justin Hart, who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, greeted him with a single to left on the first pitch. Metropoulos threw a strike to third on a bunt by Reddinger for the first out of the inning. Pinch hitter Collin Henderson fouled out to first and Rummonds struck out Keao Rubin to end the game.
