April 17, 2004
TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona baseball team scored nine runs on 12 hits to win its fourth straight game with a 9-4 victory over Texas-Pan American on Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium on Saturday. The Wildcats improved to 20-15-1 for the year with the win while UTPA fell to 16-27 with the loss.
The Wildcats scored five runs on four hits and three Bronc errors in the bottom of the second to snap an early 1-1 tie and break the game open.
Sophomore Nick Hundley led off the inning by drawing a walk from starter Juan Saenz and advanced all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the Pan American right-hander.
The errant pickoff attempt was followed by a throwing error from shortstop Marco Garza on freshman Bill Rhinehart's ground ball, allowing Hundley to score and give Arizona a 2-1 lead.
A Saenz balk, a single by Jason Donald and a wild pitch scored Rhinehart for the second run in the inning and brought junior John Hardy to the plate with Donald on second. Hardy singled to center for one of his two hits on the night to score Donald and hand Arizona a 3-1 lead.
After Brad Boyer flew out to center for the first out in the in inning, junior Jeff Van Houten hit his fourth triple of the year to the gap in left center to score Hardy. Sophomore Jordan Brown rewarded Van Houten with a trip home in the next at bat on a single to right field for the fifth and final run in the inning.
After UTPA scored a run in the top of the third to cut the UA lead to 6-2, the Wildcats added three more runs in the home half of the inning on three consecutive extra base hits and a run-scoring single.
Hundley led off for the second straight inning with a double down the left field line. Rhinehart hit first career triple to plate Hundley in the next at bat and scored when Donald lofted reliever Chad Linder's offering over left fielder T.J. Gilmer's head for the second double in the frame. Hardy followed with a RBI single to right to score Donald for a 9-2 Arizona advantage.
Donald led all players in the game with a 4 for 4-night at the plate. The freshman shortstop drove in one and scored twice. Classmate Rhinehart finished 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored
Wildcat starter Koley Kolberg (6-2) picked up his second win of the week and his team-leading sixth victory of the season in seven innings on the mound. The right-hander gave up four runs, three earned, on nine hits while striking out seven and walking two. Reliever Scott Burns closed out the win with two perfect innings of relief.
UTPA's Saenz (4-2) was charged with the loss after giving up six runs on five hits in two innings of work.
