Beavers Make It Four In A Row

April 17, 2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Aaron Mathews was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and four runs batted in as Oregon State beat Sacramento State 9-1 in non-league baseball Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field. Mike Lissman added a career-high four hits for OSU (23-11 overall, 4-5 Pacific-10), which won its fourth straight game.

The Beavers and Hornets (22-24) conclude their series Sunday at 1 p.m., and the game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com. Oregon State then returns home Tuesday for a 5 p.m. non-league game against Portland at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

On Saturday, Mathews gave OSU a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when he homered to leftfield with one out. That extended his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest by a Beaver this season and matching the longest of Mathews' career.

Mathews added a run-scoring double in Oregon State's five-run third inning and a two-run single in the Beavers' three-run ninth. Lissman, who had missed OSU's last two games after hurting his ankle, had a run-scoring single in the third inning and tacked on a run-scoring double in the ninth.

That was plenty of support for Dallas Buck and Kevin Gunderson, as the freshmen combined on a six-hitter for the Beavers.

Buck went the first 6 1/3 innings, matching his career best with nine strikeouts while walking none; he allowed one run on six hits as he improved to 2-3 this season and 2-1 since moving into the starting rotation. Gunderson pitched a hitless final 2 2/3 innings, striking out three.

'Dallas pitched much, much better than last week,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said, recalling a loss to second-ranked Stanford that saw Buck knocked out in the second inning. 'He and Gunderson were both pretty good. Gunderson was very sharp as far as his location. We felt we had a chance to put some big numbers on the board and we didn't, but Dallas kept us right there and we were able to get away with some things, and we played well defensively.'

After taking a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning, the Beavers managed only one hit over the next five innings until putting together their three-run ninth.

'We went to sleep,' Casey said. 'It's hard to sustain anything when you've got a couple guys in your order who are struggling. Now you get to a part of your order and get nothing out of it. We're just leaving too many guys on base.'

Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury made his first start in the field since being hurt April 9 and was 2-for-5 with a RBI, while second baseman Chris Kunda saw limited action off the bench as he continues to recover from an injured finger.

'Jacoby Ellsbury's going to get back in the groove, and that will help us out,' Casey said of the sophomore, who is hitting .402 and stole his 15th base of the season Saturday. 'That will let us move somebody down there later in the order. It was nice to see Mike Lissman back in there today, and (infielder) Chad Schroeder played well today with Chris Kunda still trying to heal up.'

OSU's five-run third inning started when Billy Munich led off with a bloop single to left-center field and Schroeder singled through the right side against Hornet starter Warren Rosebrock, who had been the winning pitcher when Sacramento State beat Oregon State 10-3 on Feb.28.

The hits by Munich and Schroeder sent the Beavers back to the top of the order, and Ellsbury and Lissman singled to drive in runs and make it 3-0. Chris Campos added a run-scoring single but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double, then Andy Jen kins was hit by a pitch, Mathews doubled to drive in a run, Shea McFeely walked and a wild pitch by reliever Brandon Hall plated Jenkins with the inning's final run.

Mathews' streak matches the 14-gamer he had over the end of the 2002 season and the start of the 2003 season. In OSU's four games against Washington and Sacramento State so far this week, Mathews is 10-for-18 with two homers, three doubles and nine RBIs.
