April 17, 2004

Less than 12 hours after winning the 2004 NCAA Women's Gymnastics team title, UCLA took home more hardware, with Jamie Dantzscher winning the AAI American Award as the nation's top senior gymnast and Chris Waller winning the national Assistant Coach of the Year honors. The awards were handed out Saturday morning at the NCAA Championship Awards Banquet, which was held at the Mann Village Theater in Westwood.

Dantzscher will be wrapping up a brilliant four-year career at UCLA tonight at the NCAA Individual Event Finals when she attempts to defend her national title on bars. She has already won three NCAA team titles and four NCAA individual titles. Dantzscher earned All-America honors on both events on which she competed this season - uneven bars and floor exercise, bringing her career All-America total to 15. She holds the school record for most career first-team All-America honors (12) and most career perfect 10s (28).

Waller was voted by his peers as the nation's top assistant coach after a season in which he helped lead UCLA to a second consecutive NCAA title and the NCAA Championship record for team score (198.125). The former NCAA champion and U.S. Olympian has coached two NCAA championship teams in his two years as a coach.

Stanford's Kristen Smyth earned national Coach of the Year honors after leading her team to a school-best third-place NCAA finish and the 2004 Pac-10 team title.
