No. 34 Men's Tennis Drops Final Dual Of Season To No. 23 Arizona, 5-2

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 34 Arizona State men's tennis team squared off against their intra-state rival, the No. 23 University of Arizona Wildcats, for their final match of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center. ASU rounded out Pac-10 competition as they dropped their second dual of the season to U of A, 5-2. The Wildcats improve to 14-8 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils fall to 9-12 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.

In doubles action, the Sun Devils came out strong to grab the early lead, winning two of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the afternoon. First off the court for ASU was the No. 2 duo of Clinton Letcher (Jr., Melbourne, Australia) and Daniel Davies (So., Sydney, Australia) as they cruised to an 8-1 victory over U of A's Paul Warkentin and Daniel Andrus. Following up for the Sun Devils was the No. 1 tandem of Chris Stewart (Sr., Adelaide, Australia) and Jonathan Kinsella (So., Astley, England), as they defeated the Wildcat team of Colin O'Grady and Roger Matalonga, 8-4.

The Wildcats were able to grab the No. 3 doubles match as Whi Kim and Tim Mullan overcame the ASU pair of Christopher Biro (Fr., Adelaide, Australia) and Ryan McBride (So., Tempe, Ariz.), 8-3.

The momentum of the dual swung into the favor of the Wildcats with the beginning of singles play, as U of A overcame ASU in five of six singles matches to get the victory. The lone ASU singles victory came from McBride at the No. 6 position, as he defeated Paul Warkentin, 6-1, 6-4.

Arizona earned their first point on the afternoon when Matalongo grabbed the No. 1 singles match from Stewart, 6-4, 6-4, which was followed closely by Andrus defeating Kinsella, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. Biro, playing in the No. 2 spot on the day for ASU, was unable to overcome Kim as he fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Clinching the victory for the Wildcats was O'Grady, playing in the No. 3 position, as he upended Letcher, 6-4, 6-4, to give U of A the win. Rounding out the day for the Wildcats, Warkenton downed Nick Hegarty (Fr., Saint Joseph, Miso.), 7-5, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.

The Sun Devils return to action next Thursday, April 22 in Ojai, Calif. for Pac-10 Tournament competition. The times of the matches will be released at a later date.
