Berkeley, Calif. - The No. 4-ranked UCLA men's tennis team finished the regular season on a high note Saturday, defeating Cal, 7-0 at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the campus of Berkeley. The good news for UCLA however came after the match, as the Bruins learned that Stanford upset previously unbeaten USC, giving UCLA a share of the 2004 Pac-10 title. The Bruins end the regular season with an 18-5 overall record and a 6-1 mark in conference play. Cal ends its season 7-16 overall and 2-5 in the Pac-10.
UCLA never really let Cal in the match from the beginning, taking victories on the bottom two doubles courts to claim the one point awarded for doubles play.
In singles action, Bruin freshman Philipp Gruendler continued his trend of being the first to finish, as he gave UCLA a 2-0 advantage by dispatching of Kuni Minato, 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 6 spot. That match was followed by court No. 1, where UCLA's Tobias Clemens snapped a four-match losing skid with his 7-6, 6-0 victory over Wayne Wong.
Already ahead 3-0, UCLA clinched the match at court No. 4, where junior Alberto Francis defeated Patrick Briaud, 6-4, 6-3. Following that victory, UCLA's Luben Pampoulov, Chris Lam and Kris Kwinta captured the remaining three matches, earning the Bruins the shutout decision.
UCLA, which has now won the Pac-10 title a total of 33 times since 1928, last captured the conference championship back in 2002.
Next up for UCLA will be the Pac-10 Individual Championships, April 22-25 in Ojai, Calif. The Bruins will have to wait until early May to find out who they will likely host in NCAA Regional play.
