Washington Defeats Idaho in State Challenge Cup Track Meet

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The state of Washington, with squads from Washington State, Eastern Washington and the University of Washington, won the State Challenge Cup track and field meet over Idaho teams from the University of Idaho and Boise State. Men's team scoring was Washington 463, Idaho 169, while the women's team scoring was Washington 348, Idaho 284.
The Washington State Cougars provided three double-winners to the total for the apple state. James McSwain won both the men's 100m (10.84 seconds) and 200m dashes (PR 21.37w) while Nicole Hatcher won both the women's 100m (12.39) and 200m dashes (24.81). Thrower Tim Gehring won both the men's shot put (18.84m/61-feet, 9 3/4 inches) and the hammer (57.04m/187-2).
WSU senior Monique Jessie won the 400m hurdles with an NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 1:00.74 while Karla McGee won the women's pole vault clearing the bar at a height equal to her PR and an NCAA RQ of 3.85m/12-7 1/2.
WSU men winning Saturday included Andrew Jones in the 3000m (8:41.56), Lamarr Kirk, James McSwain, Jarrell Nelson and Jaycee Robertson in the 4x100m relay (NCAA RQ 40.63), David Turpin in the high jump (1.95m/6-4 3/4), Paul Nicoletti in the pole vault (4.85m/15-11), and Jamil Smith in the triple jump (14.73m/48-4w).
Boise State's Miruna Mataoanu won the women's high jump (1.80m/5-10 3/4) and the triple jump (12.78m/41-11 1/4) with marks that surpassed NCAA RQ standards. BSU's Abbey Elsberry won the women's shot put and bettered her meet record with an NCAA RQ throw of 14.58m/47-10. Washington's Laur Halverson won the women's 3000m steeplechase with an NCAA RQ time of 10:57.17. Idaho's Ina Reiber reached a regional mark with her winning discus throw of 55.16m/181-0.
In men's events, BSU's Keron Francis won the javelin with an NCAA RQ mark of 63.54m/208-5
Washington State hosts Mooberry Track home meets for the next two weekends - the Cougar Invitational April 24, and the Washington Dual Meet May 1.
