Arizona State Track and Field Shines at Mt. SAC Relays Following Day Two

TEMPE, Ariz. - Several members of the Arizona State track and field programs traveled to the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend and opened action with several solid performances at the prestigious meet in Walnut, Calif., Saturday. Overall, six different Sun Devils competed in the field events with four Top 5 finishes and one victory to their credit.

On Friday evening, Travis Jones competed in two events for the men, placing third in the hammer with a toss of 57.70m (189-04) after taking ninth in the discus with a heave of 49.64m (162-10). Also in the hammer toss, Jennifer Kowacz recorded a mark of 56.61m (185-09) to place fifth in the women's event. In the lone track event for the team, Amy Hastings clocked a 16:02.53 to place seventh overall in the 5,000m run. Hastings' run is the fourth-fastest in school history.

In the field Saturday, Trevell Quinley opened action for ASU as he cleared 2.08m (6-9.75) in the high jump to finish as the runner-up in the event. For the women, Julia Pedersen secured the victory in the women's discus with a throw of 51.31m (168-4) and was the lone competitor in the event to record a mark of over 50 meters. Her teammate, Sandra Orsund, placed 11th in the event with a toss of 41.70m (136-10).

Sunday will see six different Sun Devils compete as they close out the final day of the Relays. Quinley will participate in the long jump while Jones competes in the shot put. Asokah Muhammad rounds out the men's entrants as he will compete in the triple jump. For the women, Kowacz and Pedersen will throw the shot put and Porchea Carroll will enter the 100m dash. Also for the women, Jacquelyn Johnson will enter the 100m hurdles, long jump and high jump.
